Tours

Tours take place in the education space which looks down onto the facility through a huge 6m viewing window! They are an hour and a half in length and have been tailored to suit young children (3+), reading age students, and adults from across the community.

Tours can accommodate up to 38 people. They are located on Colson Road in Waiwhakaiho with room for car and bus parking. To access the education space there is a flight of stairs with no lift access. More information including health and safety forms are available once your group is booked.

Ko te āhua o te taiao tētahi wakarerenga ka waihotia ake tātou ki nga reanga whakeheke | The state of nature is a legacy that we leave for future generations

Sustainable Taranaki hosts recycling tours to inspire people to protect our region’s unique taiao – natural environment. A variety of workshops support a collaborative goal with the New Plymouth District Council of making Taranaki a zero-waste region.

Young Tours: 3 years old -Year 4

Educators use actions and hands-on activities to get tamariki (children) thinking about which items are recyclable. The viewing window is low enough so children can see the machinery in action, and a conveyor belt tests their sorting skills. Interactive stations allow people to move freely after a short talk with demonstrations.

Readers Tour: Year 5-9

Tamariki can enjoy hands-on activities as listed above along with reading displays to learn about what items are recyclable.
We explore how waste has changed over time, how common recyclable items are made and New Plymouth’s sorting process at the plant.
As students rotate through learning stations they’re challenged by questions and activities to work through. Activities and displays can be downloaded to be completed at school.

Public Tour

Adults and children from businesses, clubs, groups, and organisations can learn WHY it’s important to recycle! Bring items to test our staff as we’d love your input!
